Depending on what else you get, you might want to move the mint by the shade

tree- it does well in partial shade.

Thank you. I'll move it to the shady side and see how it does. I've wondered though what folks meant by "partial" shade though. Does that mean full sun for part of the day and shade the rest? Or does it mean under trees where the sunlight filters through as spots of light?

Go down to your local hardware store, and get a stud finder- they'll help

you find the beams you need. Also, remember that the ropes/chains don't need

to hang absolutely vertically for the seat to swing well- you can arrange

the attachment points to suit your porch, within reason.

I've got several stud finders. Even the latest one though, sometimes lies. That section of the porch is only a couple of feet wider than the swing. This is a 1983 suburban home, not a century old small town house of the sort that often had long porches. And being a new house the rafters are on 24 inch centers, not 16, so there are fewer to choose from. I *might* be able to get into that section of the attic to add additional supporting beams but I'm not sure. If it doesn't work out, the hanging swing goes back and we buy one of the cast iron sided, wooden slat park benches instead.
