I cross the border regularly for SCA events and I have never, ever, been
held for search or been asked more than a few usual questions (work, where
do I live, etc, etc...).

I don't generally cross at Windsor, though (sometimes Cornwall, but
generally from Quebec, not Ontario) so I can't help about that. There
doesn't seem to be any traffic problems crossing the border at other points
along the Quebec-USA border.
