No, no....I would have really been in trouble, then!
There's a limit ($400??? I forget) that one can purchase overseas and
not have to pay duties and such on, and I had exceeded that limit, what
with all of my books and purchases for friends.  My
giant-roller-suitcase (the kind big enough to put a person in) was
entirely stuffed with books, with the corners padded out with old sox
and tee shirts and such. (and quite clearly marked with all kinds of 
warnings to be careful because of the weight!]  Opening it, getting over 
the embarassment of the dirty laundry and *explaining* it all would have 
be a huge, time-wasting hassle.  So he was really sweet in letting me 
through without the hassle, and without paying any extra money....
Hope that explains it! ;o)
