Bless you Anahita! I thought I should be able to easily find them in the alibaghadi....

Will be happy to report back, but for this stuffed fig leaves is probably more than close enough. Obviously lots of veggies were stuffed. This is going to be a very beginning easy article, with my extremely easy (& actually microwavable in this 100+ heat) recipe, plus a few historical facts. I used to do the traditional thing and boil them, but had way too much trouble with the dolmas exploding. I think about 25% of the stuffed leaves were staying stuffed. Now I cook the rice (short or medium grain) first, then season, stuff & bake. You do such scholarly, period research that you may well be disappointed...

Don't feel bad about missing Pensic. In my 19 years in the SCA, I have yet to make it. We are still making plans, and it is getting closer. It took us 4 or 5 years to make it to the Grand Outlandish, but we have gone to 4 or 5 now. And I was blessed to be at Outlands/Atenveldt I (no longer held). Really rough, primative site--no onsite water. Fabulous war. Arguably the best I have attended...

As an aside, I probably spelled oomashallah incorrectly, it probably is inashallah. Not being a fusspot, but it is my understanding from my friends from Jordan (whose mother seems to speak more in a Syrian style), that the English generally translate this into "God willing" (sounds really impressive). They maintain a truer translation is "God would hope". Not to get all religious on anybody, but we always find this concept somewhat amusing in our family because it does infer that God indeed would be disappointed if something doesn't happen.

Take care & keep your spirits up!

My recollection is there is mention in some Reliable Source (tm) of
*fig* leaves used to wrap food, not vine, probably in Andrew Dalby. I
would guess very young fig leaves - like, in spring. They do get huge
- there are producing fig trees here in NoCal.

Alas, in my five years in the SCA, i have yet to make it from
Northern California to Western Pennsylvania in August...

Next year at Pennsic, inshallah (trans. "God willing").
