I don't know which recipe you used or how long
you baked them. Lebkuchen is supposed to be
crispy, but not rock-like. But then again,
perhaps your recipe is like springerle, which
comes out of the oven hard as rocks and is
supposed to age a month to soften them to an
edible form. I remember as a child making
lebkuchen Christmas tree ornaments that were
supposed to be hard to withstand the abuse it
took hanging from a tree branch.
Unfortunately, the more fats or shortenings you
use in a cookie, the more likely it is that it
won't keep the impression during baking. Soft
but amorphous or hard and sculpted. Your choice
with some cookies.

I got most of mine off of e-Bay and paid a lot
less that House charges. Of course, I had to
wait for some of the designs to appear before
I could buy them. So, if you need them _now_,
House is better, in that respect.
