It means "butter".  As a further evidence, I found a passage in a 16th c. agricultural manual.  In the section dealing with cattle, the author comments on a certain breed of cows which breed regularly and give good milk and butter ("leche y manteca").  He suggests that their calves should either be butchered or else given to other cows to nurse, so the house can benefit from much good milk and butter and cheese.  Clearly, the "manteca" referred to here is a dairy product.
