Genoa became a free commune in the 10th Century and started building its
trading ties into Byzantium and the Black Sea region, so it could have
easily followed the ladder of rivers north. Genoa lost most of its trade
connections around the Black Sea as the Ottomans moved into the region in
the 15th Century.

That being said, the sources I've referenced over the years place vodka
production in the 16th Century. I'd love to have the citation on this one.

Bear

>> Vodka was well established in the Russias as early as the 10th century
>> according to records of Genovese Traders.
