In about 1990, I read a local newspaper article about a
House Rental Gone Bad (TM).
The owners were going to be overseas for more than 1 year
-- a local Real Estate Agency found a 'qualified' renter.
The renter prepaid the rent for the full 12 months.
When the owners returned to the USA, they gradually noted
these (and other) changes to their house and property:
(1) living room had a lot of cheap shelving and
about 20 new power outlets
(2) after a toilet flush, the gentle sound of
moving water was heard coming from the basement
(3) all of the PVC drain lines in the house had
been eaten away -- dissolved
(4) the septic tank, leeching fields, and
nearby soil was contaminated by toxic waste
(5) the pollution plume extended beyond their
property line toward one neighbor's well
(6) they now owned a $5 million (IIRC) superfund
site (toxic waste)
(7) the state supplied water by the tanker load
(8) all of the neighbors were suing them for loss
of property value
(9) they were suing the Real Estate Agency
for 'Failure to Supervise' the renter.
Sorry, I don't know the final resolution to relate here.
