You need a food safe sealant for the wood.   It should say right on the can
if it is food safe after it drys or not.  The folks at your local
craftish store
should be able to direct you as well.

You would need to sand the vessels lightly and then rub them with steel wool
before and in between coats to break up the non food safe finish that is there
and to allow the new one to set well.
