The mango=pepper issue was discussed on a listserv for reference
librarians several years ago. Most of the responses were anecdotal, and
confimed its use in the Midwest, mostly Ohio. One woman said that she
attended college in Ohio in the early 70s, and green peppers on pizza
were called mangoes, as well as stuffed peppers. There is apparently a
detailed entry for "Mango" in the Dictionary of American Regional
English. The person who mentioned it didn't quote the full listing, so
you may want to seek it out in your local library.
