My Irish Living History group has a hollowed out log, filled with 
water and heated with hot rocks, and cook a piece of beef wrapped in 
cloth (since we didnt have the hide)

For the relatively small amount that we cook it takes a LOT of effort 
to heat the rocks...but it makes a great demo, and everyone seemed to 
like it.
