This is a midwestern thing, I believe.

It involves filling a pie shell (pre-baked, blind?) with a kind of 
stuffing made with crackers (usually of the "Ritz" type), cider or 
apple juice, boiled to a thick syrup with sugar, and butter, and 
"apple pie spices". Basically, apple pie without apples, but filled 
with a neutral stuff flavored with a powerful apple-flavored, spiced 
syrup.

It probably wouldn't actually be toxic in small quantities.
