I'm a little puzzled as to the lack of a definate list, because our source
>of materials is very much finite. Perhaps I should have phrased my question

Yes of course there is a list already but
you can also construct your own list of Early English Printed Books
arranged by subject heading
by simply using the Early English Short Title Catalogue which is online
as part of RLIN. If you don't
have access to RLIN, then one can of course use the STC and Wing in
print and the various
subject bibliographies to create your own list.
I have been maintaining my own files on this subject since the mid
1970's. It's much easier of course
to do it now given the online catalogues and databases that are now
available. My last list of English titles
represented several hundred hours of work. It's currently only
available as part of the Proceedings to
the 2002 KWBCooks Collegium. I am sure that the 2004 KWBC event will
have copies for sale.
[Due to the amount of work that list represented, I have not made it
available yet to the Florilegium
and I do not allow redistribution of it.] I did offer it as a session at
RUM in February 2003.

Yes, but these lists are retrospective and tend to date almost as soon
as they are published
as more works come out all the time. PPC has published
numerous chronological lists through the years that listed these
facsimiles and reprints of the various
titles. I tend to keep files and not lists for these titles these days.
It's much easier to do the work online
and just print off pages for all the new titles. I also tend to
post a note the various bibliographies that I have at hand so I know
what has been released.
Cagle's A Matter of Taste is very good to work with and it's a bargain
now at only $95.00.
http://www.oakknoll.com/detail.php?d_booknr=53908 It used to be over $200.
