Regarding pears, I think that this is a East
Coast/West Coast difference. I can get fresh
Bartlet, Anjou, Bosc, Comice and Asian pears
in my little local supermarket as well as the
big giants. So they are in season here. So if
the King of Caid wants fresh pears at his
coronation banquet next week, he can get them.
The prices are 99 cents a pound for Bartlets and
Anjou and $1.29 a pound for the Bosc, Comice and
Asian pears. So a Caidan fresh fruit basket
could have fresh pears, peaches, nectarines,
plums, cherries, strawberries, blueberries,
blackberries, raspberries, apples, oranges,
grapefruit, lemons, and bananas. All of these
I have seen when I went grocery shopping this
morning.

As for the shoebox, I am very good at packing
and can get a lot more things in a small space
than most can. A lot of the stuff I mentioned
would be pre-chopped and pre-measured and put
into little baggies awaiting to be prepared, so a
lot more can be gotten into the shoebox. The
bulkiest items are the eggs. The butter and
lard each are 3"x6"x1", the sugar is 4"x6"x1".
The oil and vinegar would be put into a 1 cup
tupperware container that is 3"x3"x3". The
shoe box is 12"x6"x6". The sugar goes in first,
sideways, taking up 1" of space but still leaving
2" on top for spices. The butter and lard go
next, sideways, but flat taking up 3" of length
but only 2" of height. On top of these will go
the tupperware container taking up not quite
half of the space. The 8 eggs will go on the
other half of the space. The three slices of
rye bread will take up 1.5"x4"x6". So far, I
have used up 5.5" of the available 12", with
space on top for small items. In the rest of
the 6.5" will go the spices in small packets,
the prechopped-greens in baggies, which can lie
flat and the raisins and currants premeasured
in baggies, which can lie flat. I see nothing
"Tardis"-like in a well packed box.

As for the chicken, no, I haven't tried it yet.
It just seemed to fit in with what you had in
the box.
