Regarding pears, I think that this is a East
Coast/West Coast difference.  I can get fresh
Bartlet, Anjou, Bosc, Comice and Asian pears
in my little local supermarket as well as the
big giants. So they are in season here.

Ok, fair enough, I didn't specify in season in period western Europe.
(Which was what I was thinking.)
No Tardis in the shoebox, just a lot of Zen packing - a true SCAer at work!
