Thanks Cadoc.  Actually the recipe makes 2 loaves.  1/4 cup butter per loaf.  Hardley seems worth a stint in culinary heck.  I probably should, but I don't worry about the eggs.  (When I die at the ripe old age of 100+, they can put it on my tombstone.  She died of too many eggs.)  Sometimes I use 2 eggs + 1 egg white and use the left over egg in the eggwash on the top.

any of the margarine type things suggested turn into oil (or oil

Use butter (unsalted) :-) a half cup in a loaf of bread isn't that
much....it is
naturally solid at room temperature. You could also cut back the fat to 
half the volume and see how it affects the outcome....

And maybe cut out a yolk or two....
