[Sca-cooks] OT: rant about dilbert worthy events

<begin rant>

My husband’s work had one of those disaster-waiting-to-happen ideas for a
"bonding" exercise. Before having a company barbeque they would all divide
into pre-assigned teams and compete in a "road rally" contest with each clue
leading to the next clue, eventually leading to the food... with 15-minute
penalties for asking questions.

People were divided up into groups, and sent driving all over the city, and
OUT of the city, to collect their clues. Including into some very unsafe
neighborhoods, and areas where there were no safe places to pull off the
road to collect the clues.

One of the clues was a data disk, which required a computer and web access
(in a road rally???). People had to either boot up a computer in the car,
or drive someplace with computer access to read the disk.

The clues, naturally, sucked. Many of the slips of paper had phony
addresses on them, as "fake clues" many of which were miles away, and some
of which were also in unsafe neighborhoods. One of the clues required
serious math, and was full of misspellings, leaving you to wonder if the
misspellings "meant" anything. (Did “Chruch” mean church, or was it some
kind of clue???)

Some of the clues could only be gotten correctly if you knew where things
like the statue and church were, drove there (not a good idea) and got out
of the car to count the letters on the statue or read the “founded ___”
plaque.

The end result was a "maybe two hour" contest that the boss “requested”
everyone attend with their wives… that took four hours plus before they
started calling people to give up and come in, and NO one finished it...
This ended up with a pile of car sick, overheated, dehydrated, hungry,
obsessed, "no asking for directions" teams of computer geeks and their wives
arriving at the barbeque after four or more hours of driving around unsafe
neighborhoods at high speed...
For hamburgers...
Isn’t this funny <not>

Did I mention that at least one of the people involved has diabetes? and had
been assured that food would be arrived at in under two hours?

<end rant>

sorry, just had to scream
submitted to dilbert, dont be surprised if it shows up in a column
