It's more likely that it was name confusion.  The US has it, and calls it
pudding just to confuse things :-).  It's usually eaten cold in the US.
It's sold in the refrigerated section of grocery stores in single serving
containers.

 and also it's sold in powdered form to which milk is added, and then this
is cooked.  It's then chilled and eaten cold, but you could use it warm. The
US also likes to flavor it.  While the usual vanilla is very popular, other
favorites are chocolate, butterscotch, oreo, and caramel.  And there are
some others like strawberry, orange creme, and pistachio.

A cousin to the custard that has become popular in the US is a French
version called creme brulee.  It's very similar to the UK vanilla custard,
but uses more cream rather than milk, and is also served cold or room
temperature with a caramelized sugar topping.
