Actually, what I have is ground, so I have no idea whether it looked 
like Szechuan pepper before.  I do have Szechuan pepper, but haven't 
tried grinding it.  Maybe I will and see if the taste is somewhat 
similar.  I do know that the Sansho pepper has a delightful flavor.
