That does sound interesting.  Are you sure you don't mean shiso leaf?  They
are about palm-sized, with a serrated edge and a pleasant flavor, and they
come in red or green.  The red ones provide food coloring for traditional
umeboshi, or did before artificial coloring became prevalent.
