Citrons and lemons have been cultivated and used in the Mediterranean basin since Alexander's time. Their use in northern Europe is more problematic but I have a recipe alleged to be from a Fugger cookbook which uses lemon. Bear I believe that lemons are also available and used in late period. ~Amanda~
