Hard to tell, but it was certainly very much a winter tradition when I was a 
kid. I remember many pleasant evenings roasting chestnuts in my grandmother's 
fireplace, in Washington DC, not only when ahe and I were alone together, but 
also when her various friends would come over for cocktails. Very pleasant 
memories ;-)
