There's also an article here
http://www.catholicherald.org/archives/articles/lenthistory.html

 that mentions this book--
"The Essential Lenten Handbook,"
compiled by Fr. Thomas M. Santa, CSsR, and published in 2000 by Liguori
Publications
It's described as: The Essential Lenten Handbook covers a wide range of
topics, including:

<>A short history of Lent, Traditional Lenten hymns, <>The
      penitential nature of Lent,
Prayers of confession and reconciliation, etc.
    * A glossary of Lenten terms

Amazon sells it in paperback. There's over a thousand books listed about
Lent at Amazon, so the subject is of interest with a wide range of
issues covered. Some of the
academic titles include for instance: The allegory of carnival and Lent
in medieval Spanish literature
by Margery Jackson. One reference work Encyclopedia of Easter,
Carnival, and Lent by Tanya Gulevich
is by Gale and is 729 pages.

In terms of food, the Library of Congress lists 20 books under
the subject of Lenten menus, so the practical culinary aspects of what
to prepare in the 20th century were well addressed. A number of these
are foreign language titles.

Hope this helps.
