I have played with one, my Dad used one in the Mountains of Western VA back in the 30s and 40s, it takes a good deal of practice and some what of an educated eye to pick proper stones. In the hands of an expert I would not want to be anywhere close on a battlefield to a slinger and pity any slow prey they would be dinner. My grandfather until his old age took its toll go use a sling quite well out to about 50 yards, Dad was much better. I mean he could hit a Campbells soup can 9 out of 10 times. Hares, small animals would be easy a real expert could of taken a deer with a headshot easy, or a wolf or large cat. One could have in period if you didn't mind the risk of poaching had a easy to hide weapon and added to the pantry.

That is the example of sling use which many people think of, but to
bring this back to medieval times, the sling was also used throughout
the Middle Ages for both hunting and in combat. I doubt that most of
would be good enough with it to get supper with one, though. :-)
