Not quite true, Phlip.  There are sweet potatoes available and used in the 
16th Century.  The white potato had limited availability, being introduced 
in Northern Europe in 1586 (England) and 1587 (Holland).   I have a recipe 
for white potatoes from the very late 16th Century (1597?), but it was 
obviously a culinary experiment rather than one for general use.
