It is interesting this is talking about the Jewish tradition of
deep frying. Last night I glanced at FoodTV and $40 a Day
was in Italy where Rachel Ray visited a very old restaurant
in the Jewish Quarter famed for it's battered and fried
vegetables. It was mentioned this method was originated
in the Jewish ghetto of Florence hundreds of years ago.
Of course that may not pertain to period and I've also learned
to be dubious of FoodTV's historical accuracy, but it is an
interesting coincidence.

Also, I recall recipes where the item is "boiled in oil". Sounds
like deep frying to me.
