Actually, its of Asiatic origin and enters the Americas via the slave trade. 
It may be one of the plants that was introduced into Madagascar in the 3rd 
Century BCE and slowly dispersed across Africa.  If so, then Europeans 
probably encountered it first in the 15th Century.  Topic for digging.
