<Lurker raises 'er head> I can't find my notes with the names but I there were others in the Veneto who did so.  According to an acquaintance at Ferrara use of corn for human food was sufficiently common by the end of the 17th century to be producing malnutrition.  Which doesn't prove period use by people but suggests that a further look might be interesting.
