My roommate's 'no-kill' fruit fly trap involves balancing a gallon jar
upside down
over a saucer with a bit of fruit in it, in such a way that there is an
opening for the flies to get in. They will eat and fly up but can't
figure out how to get out; once a day you take the jar outside, still
upside down, turn it over and leave it there (replacing it with another
jar inside for the nonce). Clears 'em out in a few days and can
encourage a healthy crop of spiders where you dump out the flies. :)
