This might help some.
The Herbal, by John Gerald (edited addition by Thomas Johnson)
P. 1006 - 7
Chap. 391 Of Magydar, or Laser-wort
The names.
It is called in Latine 'Laserpitium': in English, Laserwoort, and Magydare: the gum or liquour that issueth out of the same is called 'Laser', but that which is gathered from those plants that doe grow in Media and Syria, is called 'Asafaetida'.
You also need to take in account that herbs grown in different areas will taste different because of growing conditions.

OK, I am now confused... (no surprise there)
Some sources say that the ancient Laser is Laserpitium, others say that
it is Asafoetida, another says that Laserpitium's name was changed to
Asafetida. The taste of these, however, are described quite differently.
(Laser vs. Laserwort?)
