I haven't tried this myself, however, being Thai, it has medieval  ties.  In 
the Medieval Arab Cookery there is a recipe for a smoked flat  bread that was 
smoked in a similar fashion.  I don't have my book in front  of me, but I know 
it called for placing a drop of oil on a nut shell.  It  was lit to create 
smoke within the container with a bowl placed over the top to  trap the smoke.
