The name of the Turkey itself is a conundrum in that they appeared to know
it was from the New World, but didn't know exactly what the New World was.
Still thought it was the wrap-around of the Eastern edges of civilization.
Look through Wikipedia for some quick and painless information about the
very surface of the information and history.  It answers some questions, and
raises still others.  Naming confusion appears to be consistent with what is
being discussed here . . .
