[Sca-cooks] Cold weather, was Speaking of Lent....

While i'm originally from Chicago/Chicago area (until i was 18 when i
moved to Manhattan), i do not do well in cold - it causes me pain.

We've been getting arctic air here in the San Francisco Bay Area for
quite a few days. There's snow in the hills and several short
mountains, Mt. Tamalpais and Mt. Diablo, have had snow on their tops
for days.

Most houses here aren't insulated, so it's pretty chilly inside.

And trees flower here in mid-February, and cold snaps like this
(happened in the winter of 1988-89 and again another winter in the
early 90s) often kill those trees (although we didn't have so much
snow in those previous cold spells).

Plus we'd been having unseasonably warm weather (in the mid to high
70s) for almost a week before the arctic air hit.

While there aren't so many citrus groves up here, there are many many
fruit and nut tree orchards here that supply the rest of the US. And
when there's weather like this in areas with fruit orchards, it can
adversely affect tree fruit crops, if the cold kills the flowers -
since fruits form from the flowers.

The news reports had been talking about the unusually mild winter
this year across the US. Now it's sort of like all of winter arrived
in a short period of time.
