hmmm....
for general "might need to cook anything?" a chefs deep dutch oven with
lid... and a wok as a close second.

for what *I* usually cook? my cast iron skillet, with lid

and i have no idea what my first cookbook was, but probably Good
Housekeeping. i was cooking without recipes , or changing them, since i was
a kid.  my mom is sure i inherited some genes that skipped right down from
grandma.

my first period cookbook was "take 1,000 eggs or more"
