It's a very old group.

I expect Countess Brekke could tell you more about its history; I STR  
she was Queen of the East when Myrkfaelinn's charter was approved.  
Its residents used to claim, at various times, that they were  
independent, per their charter, of any kingdom, even one  
geographically surrounding it (like the Vatican), but it's my  
understanding that what the Charter actually does is simply put the  
group in fealty to that specific Eastern Crown. In practical terms,  
though, they were considered by most people part of the East, and  
later, when AEthelmearc was formed as an Eastern principality, part  
of that.
