Could it possibly be the variety of rosewater?  I believe that some 
versions are meant more for cosmetic use, so might have this after-taste 
you describe.  I try to purchase my rosewater only from sources selling 
it for culinary uses...sometimes a little more expensive, but better 
tasting.  I also believe that what you an get at Middle Eastern markets 
is less expensive and works quite well.
