Eadric Wynnflaed of Falcon Cree asked:
<<< Hello. I am somewhat new to the SCA and will be going to a few
events
in the near future. Does anyone have ideas as to what type of food to
bring for a family of 3 that will keep well and does not have to be
cooked? (dried foods, etc) Would need breakfast and lunches as we
always attend feast for dinner. Thank you.>>>
I'm a bit behind in my reading of this list and I believe a number of
folks have already given you some suggestions on food and food storage.
Let me suggest a few files found in the Florilegium that might also
be of use to you.
Feast-Basket-art (7K) 10/18/00 "The Well-Tempered Feast Basket:
a guide for
newcomers" by Lady Jehanne de
Huguenin.
This is in the NEWCOMERS section. If you haven't been to the
Florilegium before, the address is given in my sig. line below. While
you are there perhaps some of the other files might be of interest to
you as well.
I don't know if you've already collected a set of eating utensils for
SCA use, but even when a feast is served, you will need to supply
your own tableware. This file in the FEASTS section has some good
suggestions on feast gear and where to get it.
feastgear-msg (26K) 5/ 9/00 Obtaining feastgear for use in
the SCA.
cleaning wooden feastgear.
Master Cariadoc has on his site a good article about camping without
using a cooler.
For breakfast, there are some suggestions in these files in the FOOD
section which might be of use:
Brakng-t-Fast-art (32K) 5/10/01 "Breaking the Fast or What did
they eat for
breakfast?" by Mistress
Christianna
MacGrain, OP,OL, Meridies.
breakfast-msg (88K) 12/14/03 What's for breakfast? SCA and
period.
You specified no cook meals, but if you have facilities for boiling
water, many folks have found cooking food at home, freezing it and
then boiling it in a bag in hot water to work well.
bag-cooking-msg (24K) 3/22/03 Using plastic bags to warm pre-
cooked foods
at SCA events.
campfood-msg (84K) 3/ 3/99 Non-refrig., period food for
camping events.
drying-foods-msg (55K) 9/16/02 Drying foods in period and for
the SCA.
Pickling was a food preservation method used in the Middle Ages.
Perhaps it would work for you.
pickled-foods-msg (130K) 2/ 6/06 Medieval pickled food. recipes.
pickled-meats-msg (58K) 10/11/01 Period pickled meats. Lord's
Salt. recipes.
(this one is actually in the FOOD-MEATS section)
Lrds-Salt-Exp-art (15K) 9/11/00 "Lord's Salt Experiment" by Lady
Hauviette
d'Anjou.
There are probably other files which would help you, but this should
give you a start.
