I notice that some have already mentioned olives. My sauce is
meatless, and the first night begins with spices and both green and
black olives with their juices. I rather like the piquancy of the
greens in particular. Sometimes, so the olives themselves don't get
too soft, I just add the juice first.
Hope you come up with something acceptable. Changing to something
other than marinara is a worthy suggestion, but nothing beats a good
marinara you can use for spaghetti, lasagna, or even on pizza.
