Personally, I love sweet potatoes and don't care for white potatoes, but I'd prefer to avoid having either one at a Med/Ren feast...it's just simpler to avoid period authenticity questions.
I like being considered a reputable source and it just isn't worth risking one's earned reputation over easily avoided & replaceable foodstuffs.
And I don't believe that the docs are trivia to those who are my targets.

When shall it be said in any country of the world, my poor are happy; neither ignorance or distress is to be found among them; my jails are empty of prisoners, my streets of beggars; the aged are not in want, the taxes not oppressive; the rational world is my friend because I am friend of its happiness; when these things can be said, then may that country boast of its constitution and government.

<Since it's a Medieval/Ren organization, why bother with non-period or even
period-ish ingredients at all?>
*Potatoes are late Renaisanse and maybe mid Renaissance
<Since the original question was to prepare a Medieval feast, that's the
guiding principle...not an 'obsession'.>
*I did not read anywhere that stated a medieval feast, I must have missed
that.
<Besides, documentation is fun, interesting & challenging. And satisfying,
too.>
*Yes documenting can be fun. Yet just playing with the food can be even
funner. Also, some need to take baby steps in order to retain the knowledge.
<I think it's great to serve a wonderful, surprising dish accompanied with
several pages of research.>
*Yes, but to the feaster the docs are usually just trivia.
