My mother _claims_ to have experienced some sort of sugar-based  
spontaneous combustion while snapping a Necco wafer in two...  
apparently they were larger in 1926 or so...

I didn't believe this story until there was a huge explosion in a  
Brooklyn factory making Chiclets gum several years ago (I mean,  
during my lifetime, well documented by the news media and such), in  
which airborne powdered sugar was ignited by a spark. Apparently this  
happens occasionally in grain silos and flour mills, too.
