[Sca-cooks] OOP Burned Popcorn

My dear son had a sleepover last week.  He and his friends wanted popcorn ... a snack food that I allow them to construct themselves on an 'as desired' basis on such occasions.

They put a bag into the microwave and then what happened is kind of like a crime scene.  Nobody knows nuthin.  The end result was charred black and looked just shy of catching fire.

Nobody was hurt, and the equipment seems to be functioning within normal parameters except that everything cooked in the microwave since then has had a slight hint of burned popcorn.

Anybody know how to fix this ... short of replacing the microwave I mean?
