Oh!, I'd forgotten about this when I totaled up the several feet of  
raw sugar cane I've seen for sale. Recently I've been buying some   
frozen shrimp at Sam's Club which comes skewered on quarter-inch  
thick slivers of sugar cane. about a foot or a bit longer. So those  
that have seen raw sugar cane in your grocery store and who do some  
grilling might want to consider this. Since I don't currently have an  
outside grill, I have been cooking these skewered shrimp in the oven,  
but a fire with its smoke would probably be even better.

I wonder if you could cut the sugarcane pieces into matchstick size  
pieces and stick them into a ham, much as you lard other meat.
