Other SCA-period options include garbanzo beans and black-eyed peas 
(and relatives, such as cream peas).

Or you could use a mix of garbanzos, black-eyed peas, and fava beans, 
along with your meat.

BTW, meat in cubes is a more authentic chili in a Mexican context 
than ground beef.
