it would helpful if the original poster was to say what exactly he defines as chili....for some, the presence of 
beans alone is enough to make it "not chili"

are we looking for a medieval recipe for a stew of beans/legumes, meat and spices?

--AM, who doesnt eat chili even in the modern world, having an unfortunate distaste for all capsicums...
