I can't straighten you out on the history  because I don't know 
anything about it, but I can offer some general advice. Any 
historical anecdote that makes a good enough story to have survived 
on its literary merit ought to be viewed with suspicion. I think the 
story you are discussing qualifies.

Have you had an opportunity to observe how rapidly, within the SCA 
itself, conjectures get converted into facts?
