Actually while we may conclude piggy is meant to stand
on the board thanks to the sticks, I think the egg is
baked separately, pancake or crepe style, and then
used to drape the roast.
At least the Easter-lamb recipes specify baste with
egg when not quite cooked (so coat with liquid eggs)
and the lamb another way states make pancakes (color
at will) and then lay them on the board and on the
roast and everything except the board is edible.

I think you got it, the four sticks are to make piggy
stand up and he
is basted with eggs.
