I may be dating myself as bad as Maire, but back in the 70s you could  
make an interesting toy with a handful of cans. Although it was  
usually better to use steel soda or beer cans (remember those?). In  
more recent years they've been making aluminum cans thinner so they  
probably won't work. Anyway, cut off both ends of a series of cans,  
leaving the bottom on one.  Usually a can opener works better than a  
knife, though. Use one of the old, triangular can openers (from  
before pull tab cans) to punch a hole in the bottom of that can. Duct  
tape a can with both ends gone to the can with the bottom and  
continue adding cans until you have your cannon. Squirt in a bit of  
lighter fluid, drop in a tennis ball and ignite the vapor through the  
hole in the bottom can.  You can get quite a bit of range.
