Stefan asked ". I can see myself using a knife for this, although I'd probably use the blade more horizontally and closer to the thicker portion nearer the handle. So *what* is the proper tool or method for this?"
UHM .... at the risk of sounding like a REALLY old lady ... there is a knife that comes with most 'cheap' sets, (with teenage children in the house it is the only kind I keep). It is mostly rectangular, about four, maybe five inches wide, anywhere from six to 10 inches long, thick and heavygage, and often has a hole in the . The 'Good' versions are found as standard fare in most old butcher shops. It is a standard prop in murder mystery movies. It is calle a cleaver. I use mine for any task that requires a heavy blade but where the sharpness of the edge is less important.
