And a bayonet is constructed in such a way that it can take the extra stress of some abusive usage, with a heavy spine, (usually) decent quillon/crossguard, properly-sized handle to gain and maintain a grip, etc.  Short version of the semi-mythical "crowbar with an edge".
 
Still, certainly a "field expedient" (and if ya got a bayonet, ya probably got access to a source of P-38 folding manual can openers for handling the older style ration packaging ...)
 
It is actually reassuring that the vast majority of the Henckel failures I'm familiar with have been "clean", single piece breaks near the tip.
