My children, being born into the SCA, have served as mom's feast testers most of thier lives. I make a test run, serve it at a dinner and they are required to try it. Then we discuss what they liked or didn't. As a result I have some pretty open-minded kinds where the food world is concerned.

I have flavored beef with ginger, but have not tried cinnamon. I think I will do that the next time I make a roast of beef.

The buttered beef thing was something I have used pretty much all along since my days in the "Sand Box I". When one was sick to sorrowing of MREs (which doesn't take much), we were offered the singular availability of going to the 'fish shack'. It was a building shaped like a giant fish. There one could procure, for around 5 Rial, one of two meals.

Option 1) half a chicken on wild rice with herbs (REALLY YUMMY by the way).

Option 2) Burger and Fries. a cheeseburger, very much like our American version except that, though grilled, TASTED like it had been fried in butter, and the fries tasted like the had been deep-fried in butter. From this we surmised that the meat must have been camel and the oil used to deep-fry the potatoes must have been camel as well.

I can tell you that it was pretty good ... and beat the heck out of 'weiners (fortified) and beans in tomato sauce'.

Cheers

Jo
